jubilee lake

early morning on the lake

very tempting

found this on the tree at our campsite

soft sunlight and grass

woke up with the sun on friday. it was so refreshing to be in the cool mountain air, the sound of birds and the silence of a campground full of sleeping people. walked around the campground, watched the mist skitter across the lake and basked in the warmth of the sun.

an invigorating experience everywhere i turned.

spring cheating

this past weekend i missed out on the nicest weekend in walla walla yet.
but in return i did get to spend one especially lovely afternoon in seattle at gasworks park and the opportunity for two farmer's market shopping sprees. (photos to come this afternoon.)

so i am a little envious to have missed out on a sunny day in the mid-80's but i am super excited to play with my farmer's market finds over the next few days. i've got the spring staples (literally) in the bag: rhubarb? check. raab? check. asparagus? check. i was disappointed to not find any pea shoots or fava beans, but i did manage to score some mint, leeks, and kale—not to mention two items i've been dying to try: sunchokes and stinging nettles. (just last week i was reading up on stinging nettles.)

and for good measure i picked up some beauregard sweet potatoes. a few to eat and a few to sprout. just before my mini-break i decided i would try and sprout some sweet potatoes this spring and plant them by the driveway. i picked one up at the grocery store, but am more excited to know what varietal i'll be growing.

this is going to be a good (and eventful) week.

small town in the city

spending this week in new york.
i'll admit that i find it somewhat amusing that i am this very home/garden conscience girl that is now on my third visit to nyc. i may not be able to orient myself north but i know when subway stops look familiar and i know when i pass a restaurant i've been too. new york grows on me and everytime i come i envision how i might build the kind of life i love in this metropolis. i like what i imagine.

its amusing to hear my new york friends discuss making soup and minimizing their carbon footprint. two years ago when i was here that certainly wasn't on the plate. its heartening to hear about people wanting to cook for themselves.

today i wandered in a winterscaped highline park, a pale shadow of its spring self i am sure, but full of promise and still a unique look at the city. how often are you able to be above the hubbub, and surrounded by plants to boot? freshly made hazelnut hot chocolate, pastries, turkey gruyere sandwiches, americanos...small city treats were what i enjoyed today.

looking forward to a low-key, local-vibe visit to the city.
each time i come it gets better, starting to think i should live in chelsea.

if time allows, i'll come back (to the blog, before i return home).
otherwise, be sure that i will be kicking off my basement up-ending and seedling installing plan for the 2010 gardening season. a little late but still reasonable i am sure. this will be a big spring for me, its nice to have some concentrated urban-arts-people watching time before i end up elbows deep in dirt.

fall weekends

spent the weekend in portland. wanted a low-key weekend in portland, no-strings-attached. wanted to hit up portland nursery for the apple/pear tasting (the week before, but fruit is for sale for much longer) and wanted to see how the pooch handled a trip.

the conclusion?
portland nursery was devoid of pears. and apples (mostly). all in all, i came away with nothing and i didn't hit up the farmers markets for any either. but i did pick up my favorite cider from the hillsdale market and some fall-themed groceries from trader joes (pumpkin waffle mix, un-crystalized candied ginger, sparkling cranberry juice).

my fall flavor was drank up in the trees and leaves all over town, i didn't do much in portland besides continually wonder at the beauty of the trees. how is it possible that i do not remember ever noticing them when i was in college? i don't remember paying attention to fall until two years ago. silly me.

and rupert? he did wonderful. fantastic in the car—spent his time sleeping or peeking out the window. one break for a run and to go potty, and off we went. we took walks, ran around in the backyard and he was lavished with love by my aunt and grandmother.

rupert, looking out the window

my only note is that he is easily excited in social situations and i need to learn how to train him to not jump. then we will be money. farmer's markets, downtowns, parks. it will be lovely. he's a lovely pooch, just learning.

seattle

returned to a slightly chaotic home after a mini-break that took an additional two hours each way. let's just say that i am glad to be home.

local score's that i am especially proud of are some honeycrisp apple cider from Rockridge Orchards and some hazelnuts that i picked up at the Ballard Farmer's Market. the cider has a nice tangy-ness too it, a breath of fresh air to overly sweet ciders, the hazelnuts will be something to experiment with...!

the only other noteworthy purchase was the Preparas Tabletop mister that was recently reviews on the Apartment Therapy Kitchen blog. haven't put it in action, but i would say already that i don't find it to be all that heavy, as they mentioned.

seattle was beautiful—the end of summer on the west coast is always lovely and temperate. i ate delicious pirosky from Pirosky Pirosky, lamb sausage pita at the 74th St. Ale House and breakfasted on bennies (benedict) at Hattie's in Ballard.

we just so happened to stop to snack on our pirosky with our backs to one of the more iconic photo ops in Seattle.

in walla walla you can feel fall on our heels, it makes for lovely cool night walks with the dog. i am looking forward to a quiet week and a quiet weekend (in five days). fall always seems more quiet to me.

vacation of the fleeting summer

spent the weekend on the oregon coast. very lovely.
i highly recommend camping at cape lookout just south of tillamook. basically on the beach and all of the tent campsites had a nice smattering of bushes for privacy. (even still, manzanita is by far my favorite oregon coast town)

while on the road we dined on fresh sourdough from portland covered in cheese, butter, fresh tomatoes and whatever else we had on hand. need a good sandwich idea? tomato+apple+cheese+mustard+sourdough. yum.

picked up some delicious cheeses in tillamook. chili pepper cheddar, garlic and herb cheddar, smoked aged extra sharp cheddar (swoon) from tillamook and a smoked brie from the blue heron french cheese-makers down the street.

the impending vacation threw me into a fit of productivity and as i expected, it was a relief to come home to a garden within the realm of manageable. tonight i will pick more tomatoes, play with my csa bag, eat some delicious cheese and see if the second crop of beans is salvageable.

tomorrow? more pickling!
